Jewellery, Gold and Silver Valuation

We weigh, we test the fineness and we show you the sums. The value of a gold piece is not an opinion — it is a figure you can check for yourself.
The valuation

A piece of jewellery has two values, and they rarely match. There is the value of the metal, which is weighed and priced by the gram at the day's rate. And there is the value of the piece — what the maker, the craftsmanship and the stones add to its weight. Many people sell by weight what was worth far more as jewellery. Before you decide, it is worth knowing which of the two you are being paid.

How it works

From weight to value, in four steps

Family jewellery estate valued by Vintage LX — rings, brooch, pocket watch and coins
01

Bring it in or photograph it

Bring your pieces to our shop in Areeiro or photograph them — the marks, the clasps and the reverse. If you know the weight, tell us: it saves time.
02

Weighing and fineness

We weigh on calibrated scales and test the fineness piece by piece. Portuguese gold is usually 19.2 carat; sterling silver, 833 or 925. Each fineness has its own value per gram.
03

The sums, in front of you

You see the calculation: weight times fineness, at the day's rate. And if the piece is worth more whole than melted down — because of its maker, its stones or its craftsmanship — we will tell you that too.
04

Decide in your own time

Sell, keep or share among heirs — the decision is yours, and no offer comes with a deadline. If you choose to sell, payment is immediate: see how our home gold-buying service works.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about jewellery and gold valuation

What is gold worth per gram today?

It changes every day with the international gold price. What does not change is the method: weight times fineness, at the rate on the day of weighing. We tell you the exact figure on the spot, and you can check it.

What does 19.2 carat mean?

It is the most common Portuguese fineness — 800 parts of pure gold per thousand. In foreign pieces you will find 9, 14 or 18 carat. As each fineness has a different value per gram, every piece is tested individually, never judged by eye.

Do you buy broken or unmarked gold?

Yes. Broken, odd, unhallmarked or damaged pieces are worth exactly the same by weight — do not have anything repaired before selling. See our nationwide gold-buying service.

Do the stones count towards the value?

Diamonds and good-quality coloured stones do count, and in that case the piece is worth more set than taken apart. It is the first thing we check before suggesting anything by weight.

Do I need documents to sell gold?

Only your citizen card. The transaction is recorded as the law requires, and you receive the receipt on the spot.
