Sell silver

Have silver at home and no idea what it is worth? Vintage LX buys antique silverware throughout the country — cutlery canteens, tableware, tea services, candlesticks, salvers and sacred art. We come to your home, value each piece in front of you and pay you on the spot, with complete discretion. And we always tell you the truth: if your silver is worth more as a piece than as metal, that is what we will offer you.

Why Vintage LX

Why choose us to sell your silver

01

Complete transparency

We show you the fineness, the hallmarks and the weight of every piece, and explain how we arrive at the value. We never do the sums behind your back.
02

Experts in antique silverware

We know how to read hallmarks, silversmiths' marks and periods — that is what separates a valuable service from a set destined for the melting pot.
03

Immediate, secure payment

We pay you on the spot, with no red tape and no complications.
How it is calculated

How the value of your silver is calculated

Silver is priced daily by the gram, but weight is rarely what decides the value of an antique piece. Unlike gold, much silverware is worth more for what it is than for the metal it contains. We analyse five factors, in front of you.
Antique silverware valued by Vintage LX — candlestick and sterling silver pieces
01

Sterling silver or silver-plated?

It is the first question and the one that surprises people most. Sterling silver is solid and bears hallmarks. Silver-plated pieces — nickel silver, EPNS, plated metal — have only a thin layer over another metal and have no metal value, although they may be worth something as pieces. We tell the two apart on the spot and let you know what you have in your hands.
02

Fineness and hallmarks

The fineness tells you how much silver is in the alloy: 925, the international sterling standard; 833, the traditional Portuguese fineness; or 800. The hallmarks, which vary with the period and the contrastaria (Portugal's assay office), confirm the standard and help to date the piece.
03

Weight and type of piece

Cutlery canteens, tableware, tea and coffee services, salvers, candlesticks, frames and sacred art: each family has its own market. A complete canteen of cutlery, in its original box, is worth considerably more than the same pieces sold individually.
04

Maker, period and rarity

Pieces from renowned houses — Topázio, Leitão & Irmão, David Ferreira —, period silverware, sacred art and filigree work can be worth many times their value per gram. This is where experience counts, and where money is lost by selling by weight.
05

Condition and completeness

Dents, restorations and holes worn through do count. Tarnish does not: darkened silver can be cleaned and loses no value. In fact, the best advice we can give you is not to polish anything before showing it to us.

Sell silver anywhere in Portugal: we come to you

Tableware and cutlery canteens are too heavy and fragile to be carried from place to place. That is why we come to your home, anywhere in the country — or welcome you at our shop in Lisbon.

01

Sell antique silver without leaving home

We book the visit at a time that suits you, anywhere in mainland Portugal and the islands. We bring precision scales and testing equipment and value each piece in front of you — from the cutlery canteen to the salver, from the tea service to sacred art. It is free and you are not tied to anything: if you do not accept the offer, you do not pay for the visit.
02

Sell silver in Lisbon: our shop in Areeiro

If you are in Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra or Oeiras, you can bring your pieces to Areeiro and leave with the money the same day — simply book your visit. Unlike most silver buyers, we have a permanent address, see one client at a time and offer a virtual tour of the shop: you can see who we are before you walk in.
03

Sell sterling silver at the best price, with the sums in plain sight

We separate sterling silver from silver plate and weigh each fineness separately — 925, 833 or 800 —, setting aside the pieces that are worth more as pieces than by weight. We show you the sums as we do them. If you accept, you are paid on the spot; if not, we leave it there, with no pressure.
Family silver

Sell the silverware you no longer use

Cutlery canteens left on the top shelf, tea services stored away for decades, wedding pieces passed down from generation to generation. If you have decided to part with them, we handle the process with the respect and discretion they deserve.
And if a piece is worth more on the collectors' market than by weight, we will tell you — even if that means we are not the ones to buy it.
01

Free valuation

Without obligation, at our shop in Lisbon or in your home, anywhere in the country.
02

Every piece explained

We tell you what is sterling silver, what is silver plate and what each set is worth.
03

Payment on the spot

As soon as you accept our offer, you are paid on the spot — no red tape.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions from people selling silver

How do I know if my silver is sterling?

By the hallmarks and the fineness — 925, 833 or 800 —, usually stamped on the base, the rim or the handle. If you cannot find any marks, do not draw conclusions: we check on the spot, with a loupe and a test, and tell you what you have. If you would first like to know only the value, see our jewellery, gold and silver valuation.

Do you buy silver-plated, nickel silver or EPNS pieces?

Silver-plated pieces have no metal value, but some are worth something as pieces — especially complete canteens of cutlery from good makers and decorative silverware. We value them all the same and tell you frankly what is worth selling.

I have an incomplete canteen of cutlery. Are you interested?

Yes. We buy incomplete canteens, single pieces and mixed sets. A complete canteen in its original box is worth more, but an incomplete one always has value.

Should I clean or polish the silver first?

No. Tarnish does not reduce the value and cleans off easily; heavy polishing can wear the piece and erase the hallmarks, which are part of its value. Show it to us as it is.

Will you come to my home anywhere in the country?

Yes, throughout mainland Portugal and the islands. You can also bring your pieces to our shop in Areeiro, Lisbon.
